Breed peculiarities
While the most varied theories and legends exist about the exact origin of the French bulldog, the most prevalent opinion is that a miniature French bulldog originates from a more massive and grotesquely-built English bulldog. The English bulldog was used for bull baiting and dog fighting. A specific attractiveness of the English bulldog is associated with a deviation from a classical dog outlook. To be exact, it’s ought to know that dog breeders used mainly English mini-bulldogs that were widely spread around after dog fighting was outlawed in England. French breeders crossed these
«English» bulldogs with so-called Burgos bulldogs, terriers, pug-dogs that resulted as a compact dog with a large head, a short-cut muzzle. Their
«bat» ears stand erect rounded at the tips.
Dog breeders being accustomed to a traditional version of a bulldog treated a new French variant of their beloved animal humorously and called it
«bouledogue Francais» as it vividly differed from its primogenitor.
«Frenchie» demonstrated a greater resemblance with an ideal dog body build. Certainly, the French bulldog’s large head with a broad, short-cut muzzle, vivid wrinkles on the forehead, dark big eyes and a massive chin, all these features don’t correlate with natural standards. But its compact, muscular body with strong straight legs, enthusiasm, a great mobility, a sheer rapid reaction, eternal readiness to start clowning around and entertaining its owner make the French bulldog irresistible.
All these qualities were immediately estimated by dog lovers and in no time this new breed became top-rated in the world. At the beginning of the 20th century French bulldogs were of great interest for Russia, especially for representatives of brainpower, aristocrats, cultural workers. The prominent admirers of this breed are Anton Chekhov, Feodor Chaliapin imprinted with his spotty pet in the painting by Kustodiev. They assisted in the breed popularization. Sergey Rahmaninov and Vladimir Mayakovsky also possessed bulldogs.
The second splash of interest to this breed is dated back to late 60s and early 70s of the previous century when several dogs were brought from abroad by a daughter of a famous doctor, Sklifosovskiy. Nowadays, the French bulldog has regained its popularity in our country. Plenty of Russian representatives have won the international recognition and supreme titles in the most prestigious European exhibitions. No one will get astonished by the fact that Russian puppies are in great demand among European connoisseurs.
In modern life when majority of dog lovers keep their dogs in small apartments, people are very busy at work and having no spare time for prolonged promenades with their beloved dogs, they find a French bulldog just the best choice to make. This dog is not expensive to keep, it’s not choosy in food preferences, its short snug coat needs no thorough caring. A French bulldog has no chubby undercoat, the French bulldog’s coat is easy to maintain with regular brushing, making it bright and well-kept. But at the same time it’s vital to remember that a French bulldog’s short coat without any undercoat makes a dog vulnerable to weather changes. It’s afraid of extremely cold and hot days.
In winter if a dog has a chance to gambol collarlessly and if its owner permits, strolls can be rather long. During the heat wave an emotional, active, high-spirited puppy with a lolling tongue should be limited in clowning about. Promenades with a bulldog are a glorious, soulful form of resting. Its zest for life, an eternal optimism, a funny bustle, games with congeners are very catchy. This dog helps to forget all troubles, takes off and relieves tension and stress accumulated throughout the whole day. This incredible dog fills its owner with a joyful sensation of life.
Branded dry feed is an ideal variant for a French bulldog. Some dog owners prefer natural feeding. We can support this position but with one restriction. Natural feeding is better recommended to consume when a dog is 8 or 10 months old, at this period its skeleton and ligament are already formed. Before this period it’s preferable to purchase professionally-balanced feeding. In Russia there is quite a big society of bulldog specialists, competent dog breeders that are successfully progressing in multiplication of high-qualified new population.
Regularly, a number of puppies with their specific trademarks come to life in some kennels. According to a properly — carried out attendance, these peculiarities can be fixed. This circumstance gives any freshman a chance to make his choice out of a variety of types, coloring, conduct characteristics, etc.
Although some sort of doubt where to buy a puppy may occur. There is always an alternative: either to use services of a qualified-working, stable and progressive kennel or to purchase your future pet by chance and for much smaller money. Needless to say, a price of a puppy is an important issue. But the main idea is to avoid buying a cheap puppy of low quality, with unfixed breed merits. It can be an animal that was badly brought up in its suckling period; consequently, all these points give quite a questionable pass to life.
It may well be true that if a mother dog and puppies in their first years are wrongly bred, their exterior will naturally turn out to be of poor-quality or they may appear unhealthy. The initial base, as a rule, can’t be concealed for a long time; it will come out in any unexpected and unpleasant way.
